Penni: What is your story and viewpoint about education?
Olli: I didn't like school that much when was a child, but it was ok. I've always liked learning by doing. The best learning experiences I've had when making music with computer or when listening about other people's creative stories from a podcast. Innovations and creativity are the best things in life which always inspire me and spark my curiosity.
Though I wasn't a big school lover, I graduated as a class teacher. Teaching was more fun than learning, but soon I ended up being disappointed to myself, especially in music lessons. I wasn't able to spark the creativity of students. Instead we were just singing together. I couldn't try more unstructured practices, such as composing or band playing, because students got anxious immediately when they didn't know what to do. They needed to be kept busy all the time. I thought technology would be a practical way of activating and engaging students in a meaningful and creative way.
I quit my job and got hired to develop a music composing app for schools. When the app was ready, I toured tens of schools, met thousands of students and saw how the app changed their attitude towards school music education. It gave them possibilities to express themselves and I had never seen that engaged students before.
Penni: What is your hope when it comes to education?
Olli: There's no question about edtech's benefits for learning. I'm 100% convinced that it can change the school experience for better, for everyone and forever. However, to benefit from Edtech fully, it requires that the tools and solutions are valid and they're used in the right way. This has become my current life mission :)
